I don't know why this memory has come back to me except I have spent a lot of time thinking about our choices in life, what it is that inspires or influences us and when it is that we actually make the choice or the feeling starts.
I believe that we are created in God's own image. (Genesis 1:27) If in fact we are created as a man then maybe we may look more like our Mother but we are still a man.
But yes God gave us free agency and choice always comes with consequence. Whatever choice we make good or bad, right or wrong there is an opportunity to experience joy or sorrow, pain or happiness.
When I was young I had long hair and about when I started puberty I cut it short. Actually I think I was about 10 and after that haircut as I was looking in the mirror one day and combing my short hair I thought it might be easier to be a boy! I'm not a petite girl but oh how glad I am now that I am a girl!
Why that thought has come back to me? How grateful I am that I never acted or dwelled on it! I am what God created me to be! Woman!
